Pauline Oliveros - Lear - Creating deep feelings

The song is a mix of very long lasting tones in which higher ones appear and disappear. While listening to it it can give either a calming or a creeping feeling because the song does not completly cover only of of those aspects. The song creates a feeling of depthness through the duration of its tones and through the shifting pitch. However, the tones are not suddenly stopped and overlapped with other ones but one tone slowly overlaps the other and then disappears in that same slow manner. The long duration of each tone is what creates the feeling of depths. Because of this the song could serve as some sort of background music for movies in which a great suspension is built up. The song however does not reach any peak it just simply goes on and could go on forever. 

Oliveros was a pioneer in experimenting with electronical and technical music which this song reflects. It does not use a great variation of instruments or rhythm which would not serve the purpose of this song. Instead, when visualizing  the song, I imagine the tones to be made up of many curves. one overshadowing the other one. they appear slowly, become clearer and then just drift away while at the same time another tone has already appeared. 

I imagine that if this song was played in a big spacious room the sound quality would be spectacular because the song has varying higher and lower sounds and Oliveros also played around with the amplitude. Towards the middle of the song it gets louder and the sounds become higher and clearer. One could perceive this as the peak of the song but I personally do not think that this middle part serves this purpose. I think that it serves the purpose to create more depths and a stronger sound quality.

With further development the rhythm changes slightly as tones appear that have a shorter duration as well as they appear in a shorter span of time. They still fit into the song and, again, create suspension.

While I myself would not listen to this song in my private time I can understand why some people would actually listen to music like this. The song is a step-away from the outside world. It can create/support different feelings and thus serve as a hide-out from reality (for the 20-something minutes of the song) because of its characteristic to e played as background music. The song is also very artistic so it can help people become more creative. Hence, I can very well imagine someone playing this song while painting a natural landscape with a lot of movement and wind which still emanates calmness.  That person however would not be me.
